Attendance Policy -

All students are to bring a written cause of absence upon returning to school.  Poor attendance will affect promotion.  Excusable absences are as follows:

  • illness
  • family emergency
  • death in family
  • religious holiday

Students are responsible for finding out what work was assigned & completing any work they may have missed while absent.  This should be done in a timely manner upon returning to school.

Dress Code -

Students should come to school prepared to learn.  Clothes should be clean and neat. Clothing should be modest, with no undergarment straps or waistbands showing.  Tank top straps on ladies should be two fingers wide.  Loose pants on boys must be held up with a belt.  Ladies shirts should fit appropriately and not be revealing.  Shorts, skorts and skirts should be a modest length, no more that two - three inches above the knee.  T-shirts, pins or other clothing with inappropriate or offensive messages or pictures are not allowed.  Jewelery and makeup should be kept to a minimum.   No pajama pants, slippers, flip-flops, pants with writing across the bottom or hats should be worn in the building.   Any violations to this policy will result in parental contact.

Cell Phone & Electronics Policy -

Students are allowed to carry their cell phones to and from school if they have a parental note on file.  During the day, the homeroom teacher will collect the phones and lock them up until the end of the day.   We discourage the bringing of music players, video games and other devices.  However, if you bring it to school, we can lock it up for the day as well.  All electronic devices are the student's responsibility.  It is their job to make sure they are turned off and turned in to their teacher as well as picked up at end of day.  Any electronics being used while in school, will be confiscated for a parent to pick up.

Food in classrooms-

Students are not permitted to eat in classrooms unless they have special permission (ex. parties).  This includes any candy, chips, beverages, etc.  GUM CHEWING IS NOT ALLOWED IN SCHOOL!  Students may carry a water bottle (no vitamin or flavored water)with them throughout the day, however they cannot have it out while using computers.

Parent / Teacher Communication:

Please feel free to contact us if you ever have any questions or concerns.  We ask that you contact us first, to set up an appointment, rather than drop in.  Our days can be pretty busy, and we would like to give you our undivided time and attention.  Please remember that any parent in the building must have a visitors pass.  You must sign in at the office before meeting with teachers.  Parents in the building without a visitor pass will be asked to return to the main office. You may contact your child’s teacher in several ways.

1. By Email - See contact page for email links.

2. By phone -  Please call the school at 773-534-5090.  The teacher most likely will be in class, so please leave a message with the phone number and time you can be reached.

3. By Letter -  Just send a note along with your child with a phone number and time we can reach youIndependent Reading -

All middle school students are expected to read a total of 25 books for the school year.  The books may be fiction or non-fiction and should be at the middle school reading level.

Special Guidelines for Success

The Middle School teachers have set up a few basic rules so that we can provide a safe, cooperative and fun place to learn and explore our world.  We are expecting all students to follow them.

 1.  Respect yourself – Some of the ways you can respect yourself are:

  • Coming to school everyday on time.
  • Being prepared.
  • Completing all assignments.  You will have homework daily (missing assignments may result in detention, parent contact or loss of other privileges).  Use you planner to stay organized!
  • Dressing appropriately (see dress code above).
  • Doing your best.

2.  Respect others – You can show respect for others by:

  • Listening to your teachers and other school staff.
  • Treating others with kindness.
  • Not being a bully.
  • Helping others.

3. Respect school property and property of others by:

  • No graffiti or destruction of any school property.
  • Following school rules.
  • Cleaning up after your self in the lunchroom, bathroom and classrooms.
  • Not taking or damaging something that does not belong to you.
  • Eating, drinking or gum chewing will not be allowed outside the lunchroom.

Homework Policy-

The purpose of homework is two-fold: to reinforce what we have learned in class and to teach responsibility.  A child who has done his/her homework is prepared in class to hear explanations of what he/she might have had trouble with at home.  If an unusual circumstance prevents your child from doing his/her homework (sickness, injury, or other serious problems), we ask that you please send a note with your child in the morning so that he/she can be excused and have an opportunity to make it up.  Your child should have regular nightly homework.
